Governor Crist Hosts Hurricane Conference Promoting Preparedness
FORT LAUDERDALE – Governor Charlie Crist today joined more than 2,000 emergency managers, first responders and volunteer agencies at the 23rd Annual Governor’s Hurricane Conference in Fort Lauderdale. During the event, Governor Crist praised the commitment of emergency responders to public service and presented awards to individuals and organizations whose hurricane preparedness efforts helped protect Floridians.
“Florida’s emergency management leaders demonstrate the best qualities of a public servant through their tireless and year-round commitment to protecting Florida’s families,” said Governor Charlie Crist. “Each hurricane season, I witness firsthand their dedicated efforts to help not only fellow Floridians, but also disaster victims across the Southeast.”
Each year, the Governor’s Hurricane Conference promotes preparedness and recognizes distinguished public service among emergency managers and volunteer organizations. In anticipation of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season, Governor Crist emphasized that the safety of Floridians is always his top priority.
In addition to organizing a family disaster kit, Governor Crist encourages families to develop a disaster plan. Details should include how to protect your home, where to go if ordered to evacuate and what items to take with you, such as insurance policies and other important documents. Families caring for someone with special needs or medical issues should contact the Special Needs Registry in their county and, if eligible, complete the necessary forms to register.
Floridians can go to www.FloridaDisaster.org to update their personal, family or business disaster plans. Additional resources are also available at www.fema.org/areyouready/.
