Governor Charlie Crist Opens The Florida Pavilion at Farnborough International Air Show

FARNBOROUGH, ENGLAND – Governor Charlie Crist today attended the inauguration of the Florida pavilion at the Farnborough International Air Show. The visit to Farnborough kicked off day two of the Governor’s 10–day Team Florida Trade and Business Development Mission to the United Kingdom, France, Russia and Spain to encourage trade and investment in Florida and its international partners with a focus on aerospace, aviation, climate change and alternative energy.

“The Sunshine State is the birthplace of the commercial aviation industry, and I am proud of Florida’s participation in the premier aerospace show as the third largest commercial aviation industry in America,” Governor Crist said. “Florida is home to 1,400 aviation companies, with 53,000 employees and a payroll of $2.4 billion, and we are eager to share our expertise through international partnerships.”

Florida’s Pavilion, coordinated by Enterprise Florida, is the largest U.S. state exhibition at this year’s Farnborough International Air Show. This is the eighth consecutive time Florida has hosted an exhibition at Farnborough, with 25 Florida aerospace companies and organizations on hand.

The 46th edition of the Farnborough International Air Show celebrates its 60th anniversary and takes place 100 years after Samuel Cody made his first successful powered flight in the UK from Farnborough Airfield in 1908. Farnborough was first established for the British public to see and learn about British aviation, but has emerged as one of the world’s premier aerospace shows.

While at Farnborough, Governor Crist also met with representatives of aviation giants such as Boeing, Northrup Grumman, Lockheed-Martin and Embraer.

“Florida’s presence in the aviation industry is well represented in both the public and private sectors and Governor Crist is providing the leadership needed to expand this important economic cluster,” said Florida House of Representatives Speaker Designate Ray Sansom.

Last month, during the closing ceremonies of the 2008 Serve to Preserve Florida Summit on Global Climate Change in Miami, Governor Crist brought Florida into the Alliance for Sustainable Air Transportation (ASAT), a diverse group of federal, state, regional and local government entities, industry organizations, associations and academic institutions that share a vision for accelerated implementation of a sustainable air transportation system.

ASAT seeks to further environmentally sound and economically viable air transportation by working with the Federal Aviation Administration and its other partners to help accelerate implementation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). NextGen will transform the air transportation system by leveraging new technologies, such as satellite–based navigation, surveillance, and networking, as well as use of more efficient aircraft and under-utilized airspace, to help meet future demands and avoid gridlock in the sky and in the nation’s airports.

Enterprise Florida Inc., in partnership with Carbonfund.org and the State of Florida, has taken steps to offset the carbon footprint of the Team Florida Trade and Business Development Mission. It is estimated that more than 198.28 metric tons of carbon dioxide are expected to be generated from energy use during the trade mission from related travel and lodging. This carbon footprint will be offset by investing in reforestation projects in the Southeastern United States.
